About WriteHere
===============

WriteHere is a complete Handwriting Recognition (HWR) and Text Editing
solution for your Newton! WriteHere provides superior HWR and powerful text
editing tools to get your work done faster and more efficiently in any
application that supports text input, from the NewtonWorks word processor
to the Notepad!

===========================================
What's new in Writehere 2.0 Public Beta 11?
===========================================

  o If a user does not have NewtonID installed,
    WriteHere will still work ... it just won't
    register until the user installs NewtonID.
  o Auto-Decaps code modified slightly to better
    support writing lowercase letters.

===========================================
What's new in WriteHere 2.0 Public Beta 10?
===========================================

  o Revised support for NewtonID. You need to have created
    for yourself a NewtonID for this application to run.
  o Changed the registration code scheme. Previous registration
    codes for WriteHere+ 2.0 Public Beta 9 and below no longer work
    in WriteHere 2.0 Public Beta 10.

  o Added support for third party HWR Engines. Currently WriteHere
    integrates with Graffiti to provide Graffiti recognition in
    WriteHere (Graffiti is required for this to work).
  o What used to be the auto-decap button is now the recognition
    menu. This menu is used to quickly change HWR preferences from
    within WriteHere.
  o Added to the recognition menu toggles to switching between
    printing and cursive modes.
  o Added the "No spaces" command.
  o Recognition Window now a modular proto.

  o Minor interface tweaks.
  o Reorganized the menus. The Tools menu now contains the
    select all and select paragraph, and time and date stamp
    commands.
  o Open Clipboard Editor menu item is now always present from the
    clipboard menu.

  o Auto-Decapitalize icon now properly updates when you change it in prefs.
  o Removed the ShowTips command and views for size considerations.
  o Fixed a bug that caused WriteHere to forget its position (when
    minimized and expanded).
  o Fixed a bug that prevented text from being sent from the register
    when the user closed or minimized WriteHere.

WriteHere Features
==================

* denotes new feature in Public Beta 10

  o Enhanced handwriting recognition

    - Corrector+ Integration: Corrects common handwriting recognition mistakes by
      adding limited word-based recognition to the printed recognizer.
    - Auto-Decapitalization: Intelligently (de)capitalizes your written text.
	- Gesture support. Use forward, backward, and double tap gestures to
	  add spaces, backspace, forward delete, display the punctuation popup,
	  toggle auto-decaps and more!

	* No spaces command: Everything you write will be entered without spaces.
	  It doesn't matter if you pause within a word, WriteHere won't add
	  additional spaces (use gestures to add spaces). This command makes it
	  easy to write: "http://www.tow.com/" without having spaces appear,
	  as in: "http: // WWW. tow. Com"

    * Quick access to HWR preferences: Switch between cursive and printed
      recognizers with ease.
    * HWR Engine Plug Ins: WriteHere supports third-party HWR engine plug ins.

  o Powerful text editing tools

	- Multiple Clipboards: Save frequently used text for quick access!
	- Writing Tools Extensions: Tools that enhance text editing!
	- Writing Format Extensions: Write in chemical notation, ALL CAPS and other
	  languages!
	- Full Style Support: Change the style of all text inputted by WriteHere.
	- Multi-line Register: See and edit your text before it is sent to the key
	  view. Send the contents of the register directly to a new note in the
	  Notepad.
	- Select all and select paragraph commands.
	- Caret Popup: One tap access to the standard caret popup.
	- Status Bar: Easy access to navigation and editing keys.

  o Miscellaneous

    - Anytime, Anywhere: HWR in any view that supports text input.
    - Auxillary Buttons: Convenient buttons for the Notepad or background app.
	- Adjustable Size: Adjust the size of WriteHere for your convenience.
	- Minimize: Shrink WriteHere into a small, draggable, button.

===================
System Requirements
===================

WriteHere requires Newton OS 2.x and 56K of storage space.
WriteHere requires a NewtonID for registration purposes.

====================
Installing WriteHere
====================

WriteHere is installed like any Newton package, using the Newton
Backup Utility (NBU), the Newton Connection Utilities (NCU), or
any third-party package downloading utility.

  o WriteHere: Unfiled Icons folder in Extras.
  o WH ClipEditor: Unfiled Icons folder in Extras.
  o Corrector+: Unfiled Icons folder in Extras.
  o WriteHere Tools: Extensions folder in Extras.

===============
Using WriteHere
===============

Tapping on WriteHere's icon from the Extras Drawer will start up
the app and display the main entry view.

The following interface features are present when WriteHere is open:

1) Register View: The register functions as a small scratchpad where text
   will appear before being sent to the current keyview (i.e. the Notepad,
   Dates, or the NewtWorks word processor). You can show or hide the register
   by tapping on the register button, located at the top of the toolbar
   (see below).

2) Recognition View: Anything you write in the recognition view will be sent
   immediately to either the (1) register or (2) the current keyview. Make sure
   the insertion caret is visible before writing. The recognition view now
   accepts three gestures for performing common actions such as: backspace,
   inserting spaces, cursor navigation, toggling auto-decapitalization, and
   more! See prefs for more information.

3) Status Bar: This contains many important features for WriteHere

	o Info Button: Allows access to the (1) About Box and
	  (2) Preferences, (3) Registration
	o Keyboard button: Displays the software keyboard.
	o Delete button: Deletes characters.
	o Left and Right arrows: Moves the insertion caret left and right.
	o Tab button: Inserts a tab.
	o Space button: Inserts a space.
	o Return button: Inserts a carriage return.
	o Shrink button: Minimizes WriteHere into a small window.
	o Close button: Closes WriteHere.

4) Tool Bar:

	o Register: Tapping on this opens or closes the Register.
	o Recognition: Tapping here lets you toggle auto-decapitalization,
	  toggle no spaces, use alternate HWR engines, and switch between
	  the printed and cursive recognizers.
	o Tools: Tapping here lets you have access to date/time stamp tools,
	  text selection commands, WriteHere Tools and Writing Formats.
	o Punctuation Popup: Displays the familar punctuation popup.
	o Style Button: Displays a style menu, with which to change
	  fonts, sizes, styles, and pen sizes.

5) Clipboard button: This button is located on the right of the recognition
   view. Tapping on the clipboard button will show the following commands:

   o Clipboard Editor: Opens the WH ClipEditor application to create, edit,
     and delete clippings.
   o Clippings: If clippings are present, send the selected clipping to the
     current keyview.

============
The Register
============

If the register is open, any text written in WriteHere will be sent directly
to the register, which functions similarly to the Notepad. You can edit
text, change styles, and select text from within the register. Send the contents
directly to the current key view by tapping on the Send button. Raise or lower
the register height by tapping on the small triangles above the Send button.

========================
Auto-Decapitalizing text
========================

Architects and engineers are used to writing in all caps. The Newton printed
recognizer, for all its power, does not convert all caps to its
lowercase and uppercase counterparts. Selecting the auto-decaps feature
makes WriteHere intelligenty decapitalize all text except for beginning of
sentences, proper names, and other special words.

=========
No spaces
=========

Have you ever tried to write: "http://www.tow.com" and had
Newton recognize your input as: "http: / / WWW. tow. Com"???
Since the recognizer interprets the pauses in your writing as
a sign to insert spaces, we get these problems. As a result,
we have to manually remove the spaces, decapitalize the text,
etc.

With the No Spaces command, you can simply write, pause,
write, and pause ... and WriteHere will never insert a space.

Use the WriteHere forward gesture to insert spaces. This
brings some of the niceties of Graffiti back to the Newton.

=====================
Alternate HWR Engines
=====================

WriteHere now supports third-party HWR engines within WriteHere.
Currently, a beta version of Graffiti integration is included
in WriteHere. Select the "New HWR Engine" command from the
recognition window to activate Graffiti integration. You must
have a version of Graffiti installed on your system to use this
feature.

Be sure to deactivate the HWR Engine when you are finished.

===================
Multiple Clipboards
===================

To save a clipping, select some text and drag it over WriteHere's recognition
view. A gray border will appear around WriteHere; lift the pen and the
text will be saved to the WriteHere Clipboard. To send clippings to the
current keyview, tap on the Clipboard Button and choose the clipping
from the menu. To create, edit, or delete clippings, choose Clipboard Editor
from the menu.

If WriteHere is minimized, you can still drag selected text to the minimized
view to create a new clipping.

============
Using Styles
============

You can now access all the styles from your favorite word processor: Bold,
Italic, Super/Subscript, and more! Tapping on the style button will bring up
the current font being used. Styles now works in all views, including the
Notepad and the NewtWorks word processor!

==============================
Clearing and Sending Registers
==============================

You can select any text in the register window and drag it to the
appropriate view. Tapping on the send button will send the entire register
to the current key view. Clear the register by scrubbing in the view.

====================
Minimizing WriteHere
====================

Tapping on the shrink button on the status bar will minimize WriteHere to a
small view. Tapping again will expand WriteHere.

====================
Changing Preferences
====================

Select the "Prefs" popup item from the info button. A view will be displayed
with three tabs, (1) General, (2) Display, (3) Recognition. Tap on a tab to
see its preferences.

o General Preferences

  - Open on startup: WriteHere automatically opens whenever the Newton is
    restarted.
  - Background button: Installs a button in the current background app.
  - Store clipboard items internally: stores all new clippings on the internal
	memory store.
  - Send entire register contents when filled: When the register is filled,
    checking this box will make WriteHere send the entire register to the
    key view. Otherwise, Writehere will send one word at a time from the
    register to the current key view.

o Display Preferences

  - App Width: Adjust the width of the WriteHere window.
  - Register Height: Adjust the number of lines the Register displays.

o Recognition Preferences

  - Auto-Decapitalize: Makes WriteHere intelligently (de)capitalize text.
  - Use Corrector+: When using registers, WriteHere pipes the words the user
    writes to Corrector+, a correction utility for the Newton.
  - Auto-Correct: Corrector+ and WriteHere will automatically correct the words
    you write (instead of making you double-tap on the word).
  - Open Corrector+: Opens the Corrector+ application, if installed.

  Recognition Window gesture actions

  - Double tap: Double tapping in the recognition window can toggle
    auto-decapitalization, toggle no spaces, bring up the punctuation
    popup, or select text.
  - Forward stroke: A horizontal line (from left to right) can either:
    insert a space, move the cursor to the right, or perform a forward
    delete. NOTE: if you are at the end of a line, using the forward stroke
    may perform a backspace (Newton doesn't handle the forward delete
    character very well).
  - Backward stroke: A horizontal line (from right to left) can either:
    delete the previous character or move the cursor to the left.
